An essay
by Dr. Michael Eidenmuller, assistant professor
of speech communication, was published in the Journal of Communication
and Religion, Vol. 25 (2002).
Titled “Amerian
Evangelicalism, Democracy, and Civic Piety: A Computer-Based Stylistic
Analysis of Promise Keepers’ Stadium Event and Washington
D.C. Rally Discourses,’’ the essay argues that civic
piety plays a positive, though limited role in American evangelicalism’s
attempt to negotiate the rhetorical parameters of civil-religious
discourse. A computer-based stylistic analysis examined 151 speeches
by Promise Keepers delivered in 1997. Cross-comparisons were made
with a large sample (n=2000) of political discourse and a smaller
sample (n=700) of mainline religious sermons delivered over a
50-year period in the United States.
