The
2002 Patriot Golf Classic raised $100,000 for The University
of Texas at Tyler scholarship program. The amount was announced
during a wrap-up celebration hosted by UT Tyler President
and Mrs. Rodney H. Mabry.
The scholarship
program benefits students at all three of the university’s
campuses.

The annual
fundraiser, which is staffed by community volunteers and supported
by numerous
organizations, has evolved into a multi-event consisting of a week-long
Patriot Million Dollar Hole-in-One
contest, Texas “Shootout” Barbecue featuring live and
silent auctions and well-known entertainers, Patriot Tennis Tournament
and culminating with the Patriot Golf Classic, this year presenting
Justin Leonard as the luncheon speaker.
“Each year numerous individuals volunteer their time to these
events. Some of our young volunteers use vacation time and many
of our corporate friends encourage their employees to help us out.
It truly is a community effort and a success of this magnitude couldn’t
happen without these university friends,” Mary Untersee, vice
president for university advancement, said.
The university is grateful
to Merle Mabry, Shoot-out Barbecue chair; Bonnie Barbarisi and Linda
Myers, UT Tyler Ambassador co-chairs; Chris Simon and Amy Tucker,
Million Dollar Hole-in-One co-chairs; Bryan Rossman, Tom Slack and
Jose Feliciano, golf tournament tri-chairs; Robert Durham and Mary
Darby, Longview Million Dollar Hole-in-One co-chairs; and Ken Olivier,
Patriot tennis tournament chair, Untersee added.
Beginning its fifth year
as a four-year university and with an enrollment of more than 4,200
students, UT Tyler is recognized as one of the top universities
in the state.
The university
serves not only East Texas but also all of Texas and attracts students
from 27 states and the District of Columbia, plus 36 countries.
There are campuses in Longview and Palestine.
