Azalea Orthopedic Sports Medicine Sponsoring UT Tyler Challenger

The University of Texas at Tyler has announced Azalea Orthopedic and Sports Medicine as the title sponsor of the 2nd Annual Challenger Professional Tennis Tournament held at UT Tyler.

The Azalea Challenger, a $50,000 men’s professional tournament, will be Oct. 27 through Nov. 3 at the UT Tyler Summers Tennis Center. The center features five lighted courts that meet United States Tennis Association specifications for professional tennis and featured night matches.

The tournament will feature the world’s top professional players who are currently competing in Grand Slam competition. These players compete to improve their rankings and move to higher-level events.

Cowan Center Presents Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’

Two characters from La BohemeThe Stanislavsky Opera Company will bring its new production of Giacamo Puccini’s La Boheme to the Cowan Center Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The performance, sponsored by The Vaughn Foundation, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Vaughn Auditorium.

The audience will experience the moving story of artists living in bohemian Paris during the mid 1800s. More>>>

Fedowitz and Duke Win Matches at Trinity Tournament

Kayla Fedowitz and Justin Duke won two important matches for UT Tyler at The Trinity University Invitational tournament in this weekend. Both players scored wins over University of Incarnate Word NCAA D2 players.

The men and women’s teams traveled with 16 players to San Antonio to compete in the fall individual tournament. Other teams competing were Trinity, Laredo and Incarnate Word. More>>>

Acosta Serves as Executive Assistant to the President

Jesse AcostaJesse T. Acosta has joined UT Tyler as executive assistant to the president.

A former lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Army, Acosta retired from the military and moved to Tyler in 1998. He has more than 25 years of practical experience in operations and planning management. He most recently served as director of administration for Curves International Operations prior to joining UT Tyler. More>>>

Library Sponsors ‘Banned Books Week’ Activities

The Robert R. Muntz Library is joining the American Library Association in celebrating Banned Books Week Monday through Friday, Sept. 23-27.

“This year's theme is ‘Let Freedom Read...Read a Banned Book’ and we have a series of activities planned,’’ said Jeanne Pyle, library director. “We invite you to join us by attending one or more of these events and by taking the time to read a banned book.’’ More>>>

Truly Bizarre Magic Comes to UT Tyler

Brian BrushwoodNationally touring magician Brian Brushwood will present a unique magic show at The University of Texas at Tyler.

The performance will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2 in the University Center.

“The show will feature everything from mind reading to strange bodily feats,” said Ernest McAllister, UT Tyler coordinator of student activities.

Brushwood will perform fire eating and sleight-of-hand tricks, escape from a straitjacket, break cinder blocks over his head, stick nails in his eyes, read minds and lay on a bed of nails. More>>>
