the Spotlight
A
prayer study by Dr. Michael Eidenmuller, assistant professor
of speech communication, was the topic of a feature story in the
religion section of the Tyler Morning Telegraph July 12.
Since the 2001 fall semester, Dr. Eidenmuller has led a groundbreaking
study on private Christian prayer.

An
article written by Dr. Amy Stevens Griffith and Dr. Nancy
Spence Horton, assistant professors in the Department of Special
Services, was published in the refereed journal Reading Horizons,
volume 42(1). The article is titled "Using Thematic Units to
Decrease Problematic Behavior."

Dr.
James Koukl, associate professor of biology, presented a
paper during a joint meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologist
and Herpetologists and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and
Reptiles in Kansas City this summer. The paper is titled “Daily
Radio-Tracking of Three-Toed Box Turtles: A One Year Perspective.’’
Koukl
also was invited to appear on the Amy Glen Show (KTBB Radio)
Aug. 13 to talk about box turtles.

Dr.
Donald McClaugherty, chair and professor of chemistry, attended
the first meeting of the Baylor University Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry Advisory Board in July. He also has been appointed
to the Abilene Christian University Department of Chemistry Advisory
Board.

An
article by Dr. Victor I. Scherb, chair and associate professor
of English, was published in the Journal of Medieval and
Early Modern Studies, 32 (2002):
59-84. The article is titled "Assimilating Giants: The
Appropriation of Gog and Magog in Medieval and Early Modern England."
Scherb also
has published a book: Staging Faith:
East Anglian Drama in the Later Middle Ages (Madison and Teaneck:
Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2001).

Dr.
Brian Taylor, assistant professor of chemistry, presented a
paper in the Sci-Mix poster session and the division of physical
chemistry at the National American Chemical Society meeting held
in August in Boston. His paper is titled “Computational Studies
of Helium Metal Hydride Complexes.’’

Students from the UT Tyler Student Section of American
Society of Safety Engineers along with their advisor, Dr. James
Harbaugh, attended the 29th Annual Region III Professional Development
Conference for American Society of Safety Engineers at the Hotel
Inter-Continental Aug. 4-7 in Addison. The College of Business and
Technology recruiting booth was exhibited and Harbaugh presented
a special interest session on Resource Conservation and Recovery
Management for Texas industrial waste generators.

Dr. Marilyn Young, professor of management, recently
completed two research studies, "Tyler Area Labor Market Survey" and "Kilgore
Labor Market Survey."
The studies will be published by Tyler Economic Development Council
and Kilgore Economic Development Corp. and will also be available
on their Web sites.
