UT Tyler Holds Official Groundbreaking for Braithwaite Facility

Groundbreaking ceromonies for nursing building

UT Tyler held an official groundbreaking for the David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Building on Aug. 29.

This significant, high-tech classroom and research building will be the home of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.

“We are extremely pleased to celebrate this new building and honor the late David and Jacqueline Braithwaite, who have made this, and so many other great opportunities at UT Tyler, possible,” President Mabry said.

“Two years ago we were forced to begin turning away nursing applicants in the middle of a state-wide nursing shortage. We are so thankful for Mrs. Braithwaite and the Board of Regents who combined to fund this building so that UT Tyler could double the size of its nursing school,” he added.

Dr. Mabry presented welcoming remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony. Remarks also were made by A.W. “Dub’’ Riter Jr., vice chairman of the UT System Board of Regents; Joey Seeber, mayor of Tyler; Dr. Linda K. Klotz, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Allen Burt, on behalf of the Braithwaite family; and Tom Mullins, on behalf of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and Tyler Economic Development Council. Dr. Thomas L. Allen, associate professor of music, led the assembly in songs of celebration including “God Bless America’’ and the UT Tyler alma mater.

The $7.3 million two-story facility, for which the late Mrs. Braithwaite donated $2.5 million, will contain about 37,000 gross square feet.

It will house classrooms, student lounge area, conference room, study labs, computer labs, nursing skills labs and faculty offices. The high-tech classrooms are equipped for interactive television (ITV) broadcasting to and from other sites.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences is a leader in making their degree programs available all across East Texas by ITV and all across the state and nation by on-line distance education, Mabry added.

The late Dr. David G. Braithwaite was president and chief executive officer of Nalco Chemical Company in Chicago. During his tenure with Nalco, How-Baker Engineers, Inc., of Tyler was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company.

Mrs. Braithwaite actively supported the academic and cultural life of UT Tyler and was honored in 1992 as the university’s Patriot of the Year.

An active philanthropist, Mrs. Braithwaite has left her mark with numerous other UT Tyler contributions such as those for the Braithwaite Recital Hall, Braithwaite Gardens and the Braithwaite Performing Arts Series.
