University Schedules Sept. 11 Memorial
Ceremony
The University
of Texas at Tyler will hold a memorial ceremony on the first anniversary
of the Sept. 11 tragedy, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.
“This
event changed the course of American history and touched lives worldwide
in a matter of hours. We want to remember those lives lost and those
injured, and we also want to celebrate the strong spirit of unity
that has risen from those ashes and circled the country. Our Student
Government Association has done an excellent job arranging this
ceremony,” President Mabry said.
Due to the
ceremony scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, UT Tyler will
cancel 8 a.m. classes on that day.
The ceremony
to be held at the Riter Carillon Tower will begin with the playing
of various selections.
At 7:46 a.m.,
the time the first hijacked United States plane crashed into one
of the World Trade Center towers, the tower clocks will be stopped
and the carillon will toll once followed by a series of funeral
tolls.
This pattern
will continue at 7:48 a.m., 7:49 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. signifying the
times of the plane crashes into the World Trade Center’s other
tower, The Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania.
State Rep.
Leo Berman will lead the speaking part of the ceremony, which will
include remarks by UT Tyler Student Government Association president
Stephanie Heeren, Dr. Howard Patterson, UT Tyler interim dean of
student affairs, and President Mabry.
Dr. Davor Jedlicka,
UT Tyler professor of sociology, was a member of the Red Cross team
at Ground Zero and will present a program at noon in the University
Center, room 118 discussing the changing roles of American citizenship
since 9/11.
“The
Academic Enrichment Center will be available for students who need
a quiet place, and there will be a book outside of the Office of
Student Services for student comments and reflections,” President
Mabry added.
In the event
of inclement weather, a modified version of the ceremony will take
place at the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.
