UT Tyler Experiences Largest Enrollment to Date

The University of Texas at Tyler lists the fall 2002 semester credit hour enrollment as its largest since the university began over 30 years ago.

Official fall enrollment figures after the twelfth class day are 41,610 semester credit hours, a 13.5 percent increase over fall 2001 figures, and 4,235 headcount, a 12.8 percent increase over 2001.

“We are very excited about this record increase. UT Tyler is one of the top universities in Texas and we have a lot to offer, especially our top-notch faculty, first-rate academic programs and beautiful campus.

“I must commend our enrollment management staff, what a great job they’ve done, and the faculty and other staff who always work tirelessly to meet the needs of our students. It is because of the successful efforts of our caring faculty and staff that so many high-ability students choose to come here and keep coming back,” President Mabry said.

Freshman enrollment for the fall semester increased more than 35 percent.

“This is the first year we were not limited by State mandated caps on freshman enrollment, and we were able to expand our recruitment markets and attract an academically strong freshman class,” Jim Hutto, dean of enrollment management, said.

Increased advertising, excellent academic and leadership scholarship programs and the outstanding faculty who are committed to the student recruitment goals and projects also significantly contributed to enrollment growth, Hutto added.

“The addition of athletics, the construction of new and improved student facilities and regional and statewide recognition of our academic programs attracted many of the regions’ top academic high school and junior college student leaders. We’re proud to have one student from Big Sandy who earned a perfect 1600 on his SAT exam,” said Hutto.

This marks the fifth year that UT Tyler has enrolled freshman students. The university, which is expanding its programs and facilities, has become recognized academically as one of the top four universities in the state behind UT Austin, Texas A&M University and UT Dallas.

Recently, the university was cited, from among all public institutions in the state, as having the highest percentage of tenured or tenure-track professors teaching freshman and sophomore courses.

There has been a steady increase in enrollment since 1998, and this has necessitated the addition of more classroom space.

A 127,500 square foot academic and recreational facility known as the Patriot Center is currently under construction. The David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Building, also under construction, will house the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The College of Nursing has outgrown its existing space, which meant it had to turn students away. The new facility, at more than 30,000 square feet, will better accommodate those needs.

A new engineering, science and technology building is being designed and will be approximately 120,000 square feet.

UT Tyler has campuses in Longview and Palestine. The 2002 headcount includes enrollment at both satellite campuses.

The university serves not only East Texas but all of Texas and attracts students from 27 states and the District of Columbia, plus 36 countries.

“The university is growing, and we know that the main reasons are our top faculty, outstanding academic programs and standards and the first-rate students who are already here. More top students are coming. Academically, UT Tyler has become the place to be,” Mabry said.
