UT Tyler Represented at Engineers Conference

The UT Tyler Student Section of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers sent four students to compete at the annual Regional Student Conference, held March 27-29 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Houston.

The RSC was held in conjunction with the professional sections’ Regional Administrative Conference for ASME Region X. Region X includes student and professional sections from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and the country of Mexico.

The UT Tyler attendees, Tobie LaBauve, Juan Perez, JoAnna Swain and Timothy Schultz, accompanied by student section advisor Dr. Jeffrey R. Mountain, participated with one entry in each of three competitions: the Student Design Competition, Old Guard Oral Competition and Old Guard Poster Competition.

Tobie LaBauve, mechanical engineering senior, wins first place for poster presentation.

LaBauve, a mechanical engineering senior, won first place for his poster presentation, “A Bicycle Torque Sensor.”

Swain, a senior mechanical engineering student, presented “CFD Simulation of Laser-Ablation Carbon Nanotube Production” in the oral competition. Schultz and Perez, both electrical engineering students, entered the “UT Tyler Ore Mover” in the design competition.

“All of the events were extremely competitive with 12 entries in the oral competition, 20 entries in the poster competition and 20 entries in the design competition," Dr. Mountain said. “This was the first year for the UT Tyler student section of ASME to participate in the regional competitions and UT Tyler was well represented in the respective contests."

Dr. Mountain, who is also the current chair of the ASME East Texas Subsection, accepted an award for the subsection’s second place finish in the Thompson Traveling Trophy competition.

Dr. Thomas Crippen, professor of mechanical engineering, attended the Regional Administrative Conference, which ran concurrent with the Regional Student Conference. He is chairman of the Region X Honors and Awards Committee.
