Family Donates Flagpoles to UT Tyler LUC

The UT Tyler Longview University Center held a public ceremony on April 11 to dedicate a set of flagpoles donated by the family of Frank Joseph Spaeth.

“This is a joyous occasion in which we not only honor the generosity of a truly great man but also add this element of pride to the our wonderful campus. Mr. Spaeth was present at one of our events last year and addressed our need for a flagpole and his willingness to make it possible. Unfortunately, he did not get to see his wish come to fruition, but we celebrate with his family and know that he is, and always will be, a part of this university,” UT Tyler President Rodney H. Mabry said.

Mr. Spaeth died April 11, 2002.

Loretta R. Spaeth, wife of the late Mr. Spaeth, and Alan C. Spaeth, son, participated in the official raising of the flags. Everett D. Spaeth, son, delivered a tribute to his father, and Linda S. Robinett, daughter, gave remarks on behalf of the family.

The Rev. Gavin N. Vaverek, JCL, of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Longview gave the invocation and blessing of the flags. Thomas Allen, UT Tyler associate professor of music, sang the National Anthem and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
