Hall Receives President’s Award

Dr.
Mabry presents President’s Award to
Congressman Ralph Hall. |

UT
Tyler recognized the Honorable Ralph M.
Hall (D-Texas) with its President’s
Award for his commitment to expanding
educational opportunities for all Texans.
A
reception and awards presentation was
held in Rep. Hall’s honor on April
16 at the Cowan Center.
The
President’s Award is given to those
individuals or groups who have made significant
contributions to higher education and
UT Tyler. It serves as a visual symbol
of gratitude for those who care for the
university and are dedicated to building
on its quality foundation.

A senior member of Congress, Rep. Hall has served
22 years in federal government and is a strong
supporter of higher education.
Recently, Rep. Hall was instrumental in assisting
UT Tyler in securing federal funds for two major
projects. One involves research into means and
methods to improve math, science and engineering
concepts and to attract more college students
to become math and science teachers. The second
project is a rural outreach program by UT Tyler’s
Colleges of Business and Nursing that seeks
to improve the effectiveness and financial position
of small hospitals, clinics and other businesses
in East Texas.
“We are extremely grateful to Rep. Hall
and share his deep concern for closing the gaps
in higher education participation and attainment
in East Texas, as well as his desire to improve
science and math education in our area by preparing
more teachers and moving more students farther
along in those disciplines. His tireless help
in obtaining this funding for the direct benefit
of East Texans is greatly appreciated,”
UT Tyler President Rodney H. Mabry said.
As Ranking Democrat on the Science Committee,
which provides oversight of research and development
investments, Rep. Hall has expressed his commitment
to improving math and science education in order
to better prepare young people for tomorrow’s
workforce. He has sponsored bills approved by
the Science Committee and the House of Representatives
to strengthen math and science education in
grades K-12 and in colleges and universities.
“Congressman Hall believes science and
math education in the United States must be
improved relative to other nations. We cannot
afford to fall behind,” President Mabry
added.
Rep. Hall continues to support enhancing health
care services and research, and serves on the
Health Subcommittee.
“His commitment to the health of East
Texans is outstanding and evident in his push
to get funding for our outreach program to smaller,
rural East Texas health-related businesses.
Our intention is to enhance the quality of health
care provided in our rural communities by improving
the financial condition and viability of those
health-related businesses,” said President
Mabry.
Congressman Hall represents the 4th Congressional
District in Texas. He was first elected to the
U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 and has
been re-elected to each succeeding Congress.
He is a senior member of the Energy and Commerce
Committee and a member of its Energy and Air
Quality Subcommittee. He was previously the
Ranking Democrat on the Energy and Power Subcommittee
and served four years as chairman of the Space
Subcommittee.
