Psychology Students,
Faculty Honored
UT
Tyler students and faculty were honored at the
2002-2003 Annual Association of Psychology Students
and Psi Chi Awards Banquet and Induction Ceremony
Saturday, April 19, in Tyler.
About
85 people were in attendance to celebrate the
induction of 13 students into Psi Chi, the National
Honor Society of Psychology, and recognize outstanding
students and faculty in the UT Tyler department
of psychology.
Students
who earned the privilege of induction into Psi
Chi this year include: Mutsumi Abe, Sonja Bush,
Megan Cheek, Anissa Commander, David Denny,
Erin Glenn, Cindy Johnson, Katrina Johnson,
Karyn Lane, Jenifer Martin, Patricia Michlik,
Andrea Shelley and Bhavini Solanki.
Outstanding
Student awards also were presented. Psychology
faculty nominate outstanding students in the
psychology undergraduate, graduate and school
counseling programs and rank them to determine
the final five outstanding students of the year.
From this five, a finalist is selected according
to academic record, service to the organization
and community and other special contributions.
Outstanding
undergraduates included Rhiannon Gage, Alisa
Evans, Angelia Garrison, Kayla Gassiott and
Camille Ward. Ward was voted Most Outstanding
Undergraduate in Psychology.
Outstanding
graduates included Jennifer Blakeney, Cynthia
Chadwick, Pamela Kirkland, Heather McConnell
and Amberly Shaw. Shaw was recognized as Most
Outstanding Graduate Student in Psychology.
Outstanding
graduate students in school counseling were
Anthony Todd Lawson and Wendy Mays, a tie vote.
Other nominees were Sherry Douglas, Sharon Keith,
Gina Ozment and Margaret Soderberg.
Faculty
members recognized by students in Psi Chi included
Dr. Shelly Marmion, Outstanding Psychology Faculty
Member of the Year, and Dr. Shirley Jones, Outstanding
Faculty Member in School Counseling. Dr. Marmion
received the honor in 1994 and was a co-recipient
in 1998. Dr. Jones has been honored each year
since the award was established in 2000.
Dr. Paula Lundberg-Love was recognized for her
support in the association. Dr. Ron Livingston
and Dr. Kevin Colwell were thanked for their
service as faculty advisers.
Special
thanks was given to Psi Chi member Rebekah Beam
and her mother, Roberta Beam, for preparing
and providing 10 homemade cakes of multiple
varieties for a dessert buffet in celebration
of the evening event.
Psi
Chi officers were recognized for their efforts
during the year, which included volunteering
for Habitat for Humanity and other service projects.
Outgoing
officers for fall 2002 were Julie Roundtree,
president; Jennifer Jolley, vice president;
Rhiannon Gage, secretary; Rebekah Beam, treasurer;
Camille Ward, communications; and Heather Baker,
historian. Spring 2003 officers were Camille
Ward, president; Rebekah Beam, vice president;
Rhiannon Gage, secretary; Stephanie Brustad,
treasurer; and Tammy Waldron, communications.
Officers for 2003-2004 are Camille Ward, president;
Rhiannon Gage, vice president; Tammy Waldron,
secretary; Stephanie Brustad, treasurer; Megan
Cheek, communications; and David Denney, historian.
Membership
in Psi Chi is awarded to graduate and undergraduate
men and women who are making the study of psychology
one of their major interests and who meet stringent
grade point and character qualifications.
