Vanessa
Curry, lecturer in journalism and adviser to The Patriot
newspaper, will receive the Freedom of Information Foundation of
Texas’ James Madison Award on Sept. 5 in Austin.
The James Madison Award is designed to honor individuals
who have demonstrated respect for the First Amendment and open government.
“By passing on the importance of having access
to government to her students, Vanessa is training a new generation
about public information,’’ said Katherine Garner, the
foundation’s executive director. “Her work on an audit
of government agencies in East Texas is a great example of her passion
for the subject.’’
AmericanRhetoric.com,
a Web site developed by Dr. Michael E. Eidenmuller,
assistant professor of communication, was the subject of an article
published July 11 in The Hollywood Reporter magazine and republished
by Reuters and ET Online.
Among other features, AmericanRhetoric.com is a
repository of text and audio of the country’s most historically
significant political speeches. The most recent addition to the
site -- the part that got Hollywood's attention -- is a Movie Speeches
page, which lists 29 movies that contain AmericanRhetoric subscribers’
favorite cinema speeches. Included are Braveheart's "Freedom"
speech delivered by Mel Gibson, George C. Scott's opening address
to the 3rd Army in the movie “Patton,’’ and the
infamous "Greed is good" speech delivered by Michael Douglas
in the movie “Wall Street.’’ Eidenmuller says
he expects to add two new movie speeches each month.
The Hollywood Reporter was not alone, however, in
recognizing the site. Later in July, AmericanRhetoric.com site garnered
Yahoo’s “Pick of Week’’ and a USA Today
Hot Site! award. The site has also received academic recognition.
In late July, the site was featured in the “Chronicle of Higher
Education – Information Technology.’’ And in early
August, AmericanRhetoric.com received the prestigious Internet Scout
Selection award (University of Wisconsin at Madison) for Online
Scholarship in Research and Education.
Eidenmuller was also featured in an article in the
Houston Chronicle on Aug. 12 and was interviewed by USA Today for
a feature to be published in October.

published features may be viewed online at: /www.americanrhetoric.com/articles&awards.htm
