USCAA Championships to be Held at UT Tyler

UT Tyler will be the host site of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournaments for men’s and women’s soccer, cross country and tennis, announced Dr. Howard Patterson, UT Tyler athletic director.

This will be the first time the soccer and cross country events will be held on the UT Tyler campus. The tournaments are scheduled for fall 2003.

“I am excited to host a national event of this caliber here at UT Tyler. We are definitely willing and able to manage such an event, and I know all of the players will be excited to have the chance to play for a national title on their own campus,” said Kenny Jones, UT Tyler head men’s soccer coach.

The tennis championship tournament will be held in spring 2004. UT Tyler was the site of the 2003 tennis championship tournament in which the UT Tyler Patriots earned both the men’s and women’s titles.

“UT Tyler’s membership in the USCAA has been a great addition, and they showed with last year’s inaugural USCAA Tennis Championships that they could handle this type of event,” Commissioner Dave Schmidt said.

The USCAA will start its third season as a national association having gone from 32 schools to 50 schools last year and more schools looking to enter. The organization provides the student-athlete a chance to compete at the national level on a very high standard, according to Schmidt.

“The USCAA national tournament is a preview of what's to come with UT Tyler Patriot Athletics. As a site for a national tournament, this will put The University of Texas at Tyler and the Tyler community on the athletics map around the country. For the players, the USCAA Tournament is an appropriate finale to their season and a great reward for their hard work. They will enjoy the opportunity to showcase their abilities,” said Jodi Lovell, UT Tyler head women’s soccer coach.
