Patriot Classic Raises Over $120,000 for Scholarships

The UT Tyler 2003 Patriot Classic raised more than $120,000 in support of the university’s scholarship program, President Rodney H. Mabry announced during an event wrap-up celebration Aug. 14.

Corporate sponsors Cox Communications, represented by Russell Hughes and Sue Saxenmeyer, Barrett Motor Company, represented by Bill and Glenda Barrett, and event chairs presented President Mabry with a check for $122,643.

The 2003 total is a 23 percent increase over last year’s proceeds of $100,000.

The UT Tyler scholarship program benefits students at all three of the university’s campuses – Tyler, Longview and Palestine.

The annual fundraiser, which is organized by the UT Tyler Office of University Advancement, has evolved into a multi-event consisting of a weeklong UT Tyler Cox Communications Patriot Million Dollar Hole-in-One contest, Patriot Tennis Classic, UT Tyler Cox Communications Patriot Scholarship Concert, Texas “Shootout” Barbecue and culminating with the Patriot Golf Classic.

Each event is staffed by community volunteers and supported by numerous organizations.

“This is truly a community supported event, and we can’t say enough about our volunteers and corporate sponsors, who give a great deal of their personal time to UT Tyler. The 2004 event is already off to a great start. We have 18 of our 36 teams confirmed for the Patriot Golf Classic. It’s going to be another exciting year,” said Mary Untersee Irwin, UT Tyler vice president of university advancement.

The 2004 UT Tyler Patriot Classic events will be held May 7 – 17.

Volunteer chairs include Chris Simon and Sheila Berry, UT Tyler Cox Communications Patriot Million Dollar Hole-in-One Contest; Linda Rowe, Texas “Shootout” Barbecue and Auction; Linda Davidson, Bryan Rossman and Tom Slack, Patriot Golf Classic.
