Tyler Receives Gift of $95,000 for Osteoporosis
Research
The UT Tyler Osteoporosis Research Study was
recently presented a $95,000 bequest from the
estate of Mrs. Georgia Stinson.
Mrs.
Stinson, who resided in Tyler, served as a research
subject in osteoporosis studies conducted at
UT Tyler from 1988 to 1996.
“This
generous gift will allow the continuation of
research related to bone density and osteoporosis
in the East Texas region,” said Dr. Joyce
Ballard, professor of health and kinesiology
and principal investigator of the osteoporosis
research. “As the United States population
ages, this type of research will become increasingly
important as we attempt to prevent and treat
osteoporosis and the morbidity and mortality
associated with it.”
The
study of bone density at UT Tyler and the osteoporosis
research project has been ongoing since 1984.
More than 800 persons from the East Texas region
have served as subjects in bone density studies.
The population base has included young girls,
African American postmenopausal women, Caucasian
pre- and postmenopausal women and elderly men
as well as a group of collegiate varsity tennis
players.
A
majority of these studies have evaluated the
role of physical activity upon bone density.
An ongoing osteoporosis prevention exercise
class led by Ballard has served as a basis for
several of the assessments in this line of research.
In
addition to the study of physical activity on
bone density, medications affecting bone also
have been studied, including hormone replacement
therapy, Fosamax and Slow Release Sodium Fluoride.
