UT Tyler early childhood education students recently participated in a project designed to improve the quality of instruction at two local childcare centers 3.

North Tyler Day Nursery and Faithful Care Child Development and Learning Center contacted Dr. Starnes to assist them in building their programs.

UT Tyler students modeled developmentally appropriate activities for the teachers at the centers. The activities were based on the Texas Education Agency’s Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Pre-K guidelines.

“Both childcare centers feed into school areas where the children traditionally have had difficulty being successful on state measures of school performance,’’ Starnes said. “There is a huge amount of research over the past 30 plus years that shows that children in these situations benefit greatly, and long-term into adulthood, from a quality preschool environment.”
