Vilade
to Head Baseball Program
UT
Tyler hired former University of Dallas coach James N. Vilade
to head its new baseball program.
Vilade,
who played baseball at Baylor from 1992 -1995, compiled
a 118-52 record in five seasons at the University of Dallas’
Division III program (1997-2001) before leaving to take
an assistant coach's job at Division I Oral Roberts University
last year.
In his last season as head coach at Dallas,
the Crusaders won the regular season American Southwest
Conference title.

Journalism
Student Awarded Dow Jones Internship
Robert
Boggs, a junior journalism/computer science major at UT
Tyler, has been selected to participate in the Dow Jones
Newspaper Fund’s 2003 Newspaper Editing Intern Program.
Each
year the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund selects 100 college juniors,
seniors and graduate students nationwide for the program.
Selection is based on recommendations, a student’s
essay and a written exam. More>>>

Tyler to Add Cheerleading
UT
Tyler will begin a cheerleading squad in fall 2003.
Susie
Turner will coach the squad. Turner, who was a cheerleader
at Oklahoma State University, coached the varsity squad
at Texas Tech University from 1996-1998 and served as an
instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association in
Memphis from 1992 -1995.
“Susie
has over 15 years of experience and was a member of the
nationally ranked cheer squad from OSU for four years and
went on to coach cheerleading at Texas Tech University.
She also was an instructor with the UCA for four years and
judges UCA competition at all levels in Texas and Florida,”
said Dr. Howard Patterson, director of athletics.

Theatre
Announces Spring Repertory Auditions
The theatre department will conduct open auditions Thursday
through Sunday, Jan. 16-19, for the spring productions of
Shakespeare’s Othello and the musical Annie.
Othello
auditions will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in TheTheatre,
located in the PHE building.
Annie
auditions are Saturday and Sunday at the Cowan Center, FAC
2007. Children will audition from 2-5 p.m. and adults, 6-8

Tyler Hires Volleyball Coach
Rachel
Short has been hired as head coach of The University of
Texas at Tyler’s women’s volleyball program.
“Rachel
was an all-around athlete in volleyball, basketball, track
and field and cheerleading at Lindale High School. She played
collegiate volleyball at Grayson County College, where she
was captain. Rachel has great enthusiasm and an extremely
strong desire to get UT Tyler’s women’s volleyball
program up and running,” said Dr. Howard Patterson,

Technology
Department Accredited by NAIT

The UT Tyler department of technology was granted accreditation
recently by the National Association of Industrial Technology
for all undergraduate degree programs taught in the department.
NAIT
accreditation provides recognition for the attainment
of professional goals and the prescribed NAIT standards
for industrial technology. Students graduating from the
department’s NAIT accredited degree programs will
earn the certified industrial technologist designation.

Travel/Study
Class to Tour Central Europe
World
War II in Central Europe is the subject of a travel/study
course offered by UT Tyler.
Participants
will travel to Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary and the
Czech Republic June 7-22, after attending on-campus Friday
evening class sessions in May. The course will be taught
by Dr. Patricia A. Gajda, professor of history and a specialist
