History Scholarship
Recipients Announced
Joe
Vernon Tolleson of Longview and Richard Leon
Hamilton of LaRue are recipients of history
scholarships at UT Tyler.
The
scholarships are awarded to declared history
majors in recognition of their excellent academic
performance and for the purpose of encouraging
the study of history at UT Tyler. Each scholarship
is for $250.
Tolleson
is the recipient of the 2003 Edwin Morgan Smyrl
and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship
Award, which honors the memory of Dr. Frank
H. Smyrl, the first historian to join the UT
Tyler faculty, and his brother, historian Edwin
Morgan Smyrl. Frank Smyrl was the founding department
chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Tolleson
is a senior and a member of Phi Alpha Theta
History Honor Society. He presented a paper
titled “Legacy of Excellence,’’
about the history of the Longview Lady Lobos,
at the East Texas Historical Association’s
fall 2002 conference in Nacogdoches.
Hamilton
is the recipient of the 2003 Phil Stacy Jackson
History Scholarship Award, which honors the
memory of historian Phil Stacy Jackson, a distinguished
history graduate of UT Tyler.
A
senior, Hamilton is a member of the Phi Alpha
Theta History Honor Society, the Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society and has been named
to the UT Tyler President’s Honor Roll.
