History Scholarship Recipients Announced

Joe Vernon Tolleson of Longview and Richard Leon Hamilton of LaRue are recipients of history scholarships at UT Tyler.

The scholarships are awarded to declared history majors in recognition of their excellent academic performance and for the purpose of encouraging the study of history at UT Tyler. Each scholarship is for $250.

Tolleson is the recipient of the 2003 Edwin Morgan Smyrl and Frank H. Smyrl Endowed History Scholarship Award, which honors the memory of Dr. Frank H. Smyrl, the first historian to join the UT Tyler faculty, and his brother, historian Edwin Morgan Smyrl. Frank Smyrl was the founding department chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Tolleson is a senior and a member of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. He presented a paper titled “Legacy of Excellence,’’ about the history of the Longview Lady Lobos, at the East Texas Historical Association’s fall 2002 conference in Nacogdoches.

Hamilton is the recipient of the 2003 Phil Stacy Jackson History Scholarship Award, which honors the memory of historian Phil Stacy Jackson, a distinguished history graduate of UT Tyler.

A senior, Hamilton is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and has been named to the UT Tyler President’s Honor Roll.
