Athletics Offers
Summer Day Camps
The UT Tyler athletics program
will sponsor soccer and tennis day camps for
young people this summer.
Soccer
Registration is open for the 2003 University
of Texas at Tyler Summer Soccer Academy that
will be held in two sessions, June 9 –
13 and June 23 – 27. Camp sessions will
take place 8 am – noon at the Old Noonday
Fields on Old Noonday Road in Tyler.
The academy is open to boys and girls age 9
to 18. Each academy session will include a variety
of technical and tactical coaching that will
enhance performance on the field and help develop
skills in a team setting.
“Our summer soccer academy
will give us the exciting opportunity and pleasure
to get to know the youth soccer players in our
area. We are going to have a blast with the
players and coaching staff, while learning from
each other and playing the game we love,”
said Jodi Lovell, head coach of UT Tyler Patriot
women’s soccer.
Cost of the academy $110 and
includes camp T-shirt, certificate, awards and
a written evaluation from the staff coach.
Participants will be divided
into the groups based on age and ability.
“The academy provides
youth players a unique opportunity to train
with proven professional and collegiate coaches
in a fun and safe environment. We’ll make
sure everyone is challenged yet still comfortable,”
added Kenny Jones, head coach of UT Tyler Patriot
men’s soccer.
Students should bring sunscreen,
water bottle, soccer shoes, shin guards, soccer
ball and a snack.
The academy will be supervised
by members of the UT Tyler athletic training
staff.

Tennis
The Second Annual Summer Tennis Day Camps for
boys and girls ages 9-17 will be held in June
and July at The University of Texas at Tyler.
The five-day camps, designed
to teach children to play tennis, are scheduled
for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 2-6, June 9-13, June
16-20, July 7-11 and July 14-18.
Levels of training will include:
Orange Level for beginners, Junior Patriot for
intermediate players and Patriot Training for
tournament players. The camp curriculum will
include many components besides tennis, such
as building friendships, having fun, enjoying
the great outdoors and learning life skills
such as fair play, respect, hard work and patience.
“We believe that learning
tennis at camp can be a fun and enjoyable experience,"
said Ken Olivier, UT Tyler head tennis coach.
“Although this is a tennis camp, we will
participate in other fun activities throughout
the week including soccer, Frisbee football,
arts and crafts, video games, strategy sessions,
fitness and nutrition training, stretching,
water games and more. One day we will eat lunch
by the lake."
Lunch will be catered daily
by Subway with a variety of sandwiches for the
campers to choose from. Lunchtime will include
short, fun, educational talks focusing on nutrition
and the importance of exercise.
In case of extreme weather,
activities will be held indoors. Facilities
include an air-conditioned tennis center where
campers can go to relax and get out of the sun.
Water will be provided on court, and participants
will be able to drink regularly throughout the
day.
The instructor/camper ratio
will average 1:5 or one instructor for every
five campers.
The camp fee is $185, which
includes lunch. Families with more than one
child attending will receive a 10 percent discount.
UT Tyler students, faculty and staff will receive
a 20 percent discount.
