University Names Education/Psychology Dean

Dr. William L. Geiger has accepted the position of dean of the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology.

His appointment is effective July 1.

Dr. Geiger currently serves as associate dean of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s College of Education and is a professor in the Department of Teacher Education.

“I am pleased to welcome Bill Geiger, a seasoned administrator, to our campus community," said Dr. David O’Keeffe, UT Tyler provost and vice president for academic affairs.

“Bill Geiger is an outstanding academic professional who is joining UT Tyler at a time when the College of Education and Psychology has several important issues in progress – planning to have its teacher education program become nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, continuing to strengthen its psychology programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, focusing on the UT System ‘Every Child, Every Advantage’ efforts to improve K-16 education throughout Texas, and meeting the challenges and opportunities posed by the congressional ‘No Child Left Behind’ legislation," Dr. O’Keeffe said. “Dr. Geiger will continue the tradition of superb leadership, most recently provided by Drs. Mil Clark and William Bruce.”

Dr. Geiger joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas in 1979, beginning as an assistant professor and rising through the faculty ranks. He served as the chair of the Teacher Education Department from 1993 to 1999; adviser for the graduate program in teaching persons with severe disabilities, 1979 to 1993; and coordinator of special education programs, 1989-1993.

Dr. Geiger holds a doctorate degree in education from the University of Alabama, master of education and education specialist degrees from the University of Florida and a bachelor of arts degree from Marquette University. He held a post-doctoral fellowship in the Division of Personnel Preparation at the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped, U.S. Office of Education, Washington, D.C.

His academic specialty is special education with an emphasis in mental retardation.
