$11.9 Million Approved for Engineering Building

The University of Texas Board of Regents approved $11,940,000 from Permanent University Fund (PUF) Bond Proceeds for the UT Tyler Engineering, Sciences and Technology Building.

“The new facility, which will provide 148,885 gross square feet of research and teaching space for the College of Engineering and Computer Science and for the College of Arts and Sciences when fully completed, will be the largest building complex yet at UT Tyler,” said President Rodney H. Mabry.

It will be built in at least two phases, and will also include the construction of a new heating, cooling and power plant for the west side of campus, he added.

The UT System Office of Facilities, Planning and Construction estimates the total cost of the project, including all phases, to be $45.5 million.

The funds approved will be applied toward Phase II of the building project. The Board previously approved the design of Phase I of the project at a cost of $22.9 million, which includes $20.9 million authorized by the 77th Texas Legislature in 2001 and $2 million in PUF funds authorized by the Board.

The final design of Phase I of the project is scheduled to go to the Board for final approval in August, with construction scheduled to begin in the fall.

“This is a necessary addition, but even more it is another great step toward building a great university for all of East Texas. This region has long deserved the kind of quality university that holds our best and brightest students right here in East Texas and one that attracts other top students and great researchers from across the State, nation and around the globe,” said Mabry.

The new facility will include laboratory and classroom space, plus faculty and administrative offices, to house the departments of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and the soon-to-come department of civil and environmental engineering, along with the department of computer science. The new space will also provide labs, classrooms and faculty offices for the sciences, including chemistry, biology, physics.

“We need to expand our engineering facilities to accommodate our new College of Engineering and Computer Science. UT Tyler has the only publicly supported engineering school east of Dallas and north of Houston,” said Mabry. “Further, this new building will house expanded, state-of-the-art science facilities to accommodate our System-leading student growth and to provide our students with the finest educational experience available anywhere.”

“The University is grateful to Board of Regents Chairman Charles Miller and Vice Chairman Dub Riter and other Board members, along with Chancellor Mark Yudof, for continuing to push for U. T. Tyler to receive these funds,” said President Mabry. “I am so thankful they understood that U. T. Tyler’s needs, as a new, emerging university in a special growth mode, simply cannot simply wait, even during difficult times for System PUF resources,” Mabry added. He also said, “We are indebted to former Lt. Governor and current Senator Bill Ratliff for his foresight in establishing and furthering U. T. Tyler’s college of engineering.”
