Tennis Classic Results Announced

UT Tyler’s second annual Patriot Tennis Classic, held in May at the Summers Tennis Center, was a great success, Coach Ken Olivier said.

“We had multiple events throughout the weekend including an exhibition match, kids clinic with the tennis team and a men's and women's Pro-Am tournament,” Olivier said. “Everyone enjoyed the good tennis and fun time while raising money for a good cause.” The event, benefiting the UT Tyler athletic department, featured Stephanie Mabry, a WTA professional player who “demonstrated athletic excellence” in the exhibition match and the Pro-Am tournament, Olivier said.

Tournament participants included, from left, Greg Jones, UT Tyler freshman; Mercedes Fernandez, professional from Dallas; Kevin Cook, UT Tyler freshman and team captain; and Stephanie Mabry, professional from Houston.

Mabry defeated Mercedes Fernandez, also a former WTA player, by the score of 6-0. They then paired up with UT Tyler team members Greg Jones and Kevin Cook for a mixed doubles exhibition.

The winners of the Pro-Am tournament were Mark Miller and Rita Traff. They both accumulated more points than any other Amateur player.
