Celebration of Excellence Ceremony Tuesday

Outstanding academic achievements among Texas’ ninth- through and 12th-graders will be the focus of more than 25 ceremonies at colleges and universities, including UT Tyler, this week.

The ninth annual Texas Celebrations of Educational Excellence, hosted by members of the State Board of Education and 24 colleges and universities around the state, will honor the state’s top scholars.

A ceremony for District IX will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in UT Tyler’s Muntz Library Room 401.

The colleges and universities will host about 5,995 students in ceremonies on their campuses. Another 7,555 students will be honored later in local awards ceremonies.

The Celebrations events were established by the board to recognize and honor outstanding academic accomplishments by high school students.

The honored students are often Academic Decathlon winners, National Merit Scholars and top-ranking students in their class. Also honored are students who have achieved academic distinction in mathematics, science, social studies or English language arts. Each student receives a Celebrations of Educational Excellence medallion from the State Board of Education and a congratulatory letter from Gov. Rick Perry.

Joining the board in recognizing these top scholars are the following higher education institutions:

UT Tyler, Angelo State University, Baylor University, Lamar University-Beaumont, Midwestern State University, Our Lady of the Lake University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, South Plains College, Southern Methodist University, Southwest Texas State University, Sul Ross State University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M International University, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University at Commerce, Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, University of Houston, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas - Pan American, University of Texas of the Permian Basin and West Texas A&M University.
