Thoroughbred Colt
Featured in Auction
Sunbrero
Kid, sired from stakes winner Sunny’s
Halo, will be one of the featured live auction
items at UT Tyler’s Texas “Shootout”
Barbecue and Auction on May 17.
The colt, a bay with one stocking foot, was
donated by Tyler residents Tom and Marcia Slack,
owners of the Double S Thoroughbred Farm in
Bullard.

Canadian-bred
stallion Sunny’s Halo is the oldest
living Kentucky Derby winner, having won
in 1983. He was the last horse to grace
the cover of Sports Illustrated that same
year.
Sunny’s Halo went on to win the
Super Derby and the Arkansas Derby and
remains the leading sire in Texas-based
stallions by total progeny earnings with
$25 million progeny runout.
|
The stallion sired top-flight, Grade 1 winners,
including Disperal, Irgun and Race the Wild
Wind, as well as six other graded or group stakes
winners.
Sunbrero Kid also is born out of Lacette, who
is bred from a graded stakes winner and has
produced four stakes horses.
Opening
bid for Sunbrero Kid will be $10,000.
Proceeds
from the Texas “Shootout” Barbecue
and Auction benefit UT Tyler’s scholarship
program for students at its Tyler, Longview
and Palestine campuses.
The
2003 UT Tyler Texas “Shootout” Barbecue
and Auction will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, May
17 on the UT Tyler campus. Tanya Sims and the
Bobcats will provide the evening’s entertainment.
