Freshman Year Experience
Task Force Organized
The
Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of
Student Affairs are collaborating to address
the changing needs of the UT Tyler student body.
A Freshman Year Experience Task Force comprised
of faculty and staff from across the university
has been organized to look at the experience
of freshman students and explore ways to help
them be successful, both academically and socially.
The
charge to the task force is to recommend an
integrated program of academic and extracurricular
initiatives that create a climate for student
learning and success evident in improved retention
and graduation rates. The task force has been
asked to have an initial set of recommended
activities in place for the fall semester followed
by a comprehensive report to be submitted by
Oct. 31.
Specifically,
the task force will evaluate retention patterns
to better understand the needs of these students.
The task force will look at freshman year programs
at universities across the country, including
the American Association of Colleges and Universities
“Hallmarks of Excellence in the First
Year of College” program and the American
Democracy Project, in developing a programmatic
response to the needs of freshmen at UT Tyler.
This
initiative, coupled with what is already in
place with the Freshman Seminar, student development
and student services activities, will allow
the university to more comprehensively address
the needs of freshmen and increase the number
who successfully complete their degree programs.
Dr.
Robert Sterken, assistant professor of political
science, will serve as chair of the task force.
Dr. Mil Clark will provide administrative assistance.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to convey their
ideas to the chair or to any member of the task
force. The group will begin their work within
the next week.
