Grad Student to Speak About Taxonomy Research

Brian Fontenot, a graduate student at UT Tyler, will speak to the East Texas Regional Herpetology Society on the “Taxonomy of East Texas Toads" Saturday, May 10.

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sciences Building, Room 140. The event will be open to the public.

Fontenot’s research under Dr. Ron Gutberlet, UT Tyler assistant professor of biology, is attempting to clarify the nature of the local toad Bufo velatus. This common animal recently has been classified as a distinct species, or as a subspecies of the Woodhouse's Toad, or as a hybrid between the two. Researchers have been disputing the problem for more than 50 years.

Fontenot will present a slide show of his research on the morphology and molecular characters of the species and his conclusion on the problem.

The student is working toward a master's degree in biology and holds a bachelor’s degree in wildlife and fisheries science. He has participated in research projects in Texas and in the West Indies.

For more information about the presentation, contact David Ford at mford@ballistic.com or 566-4012.
