Washington
Advisory Group Visits University

WAG
consultants and community leaders were among those attending a meeting
at UT Tyler on Oct. 29. Community leaders including State Rep. Leo
Berman and Mayor Joey Seeber came to speak in support of the university.
The Washington
Advisory Group, a consulting firm specializing in research and development
issues, visited UT Tyler during the week of Oct. 27.
WAG was hired
by Chancellor Mark Yudof in July to conduct a study of how best
to develop the research capacity within the UT System’s universities.
Part of the
charge to WAG is to make recommendations on strategies for strengthening
the research capabilities at the System’s smallest campuses
– UT Brownsville, UT Pan American, UT Permian Basin and UT
Tyler. WAG also is looking at possibilities for expanding the collaboration
between the System’s universities and its health science centers,
such as the UT Health Center at Tyler.
At UT Tyler,
the consultants visited with faculty and faculty groups to get a
sense of how the university wishes to enhance its research profile.
They already had a good idea -- based on documentation provided
-- of where UT Tyler has been and what the university’s current
strengths are.
While on campus,
they asked questions about the future -- priority fields for research,
faculty and graduate student expansion, infrastructure and support
for research, opportunities for funding, new degree programs, etc.
Members of
WAG include: Joe B. Wyatt, chancellor emeritus, Vanderbilt University;
Raymond Bye, director, Federal Relations & Economic Development,
Florida State University; Carlos Castillo-Chavez, professor of physics,
Cornell University; Thomas Cole, president emeritus, Clark Atlanta
University; Shirley McBay, president, Quality Education for Minorities
Network; Alfredo de los Santos, research professor, Arizona State
University.
The university
issued the following guidelines in terms of research:
- UT Tyler
is a university in transition – moving from a teaching university
to a research and teaching university.
- WAG can
help UT Tyler evaluate its potential and determine how to make
the best of future opportunities.
- WAG also
can help provide creative suggestions for addressing issues such
as balancing teaching and research.
