Nine students from UT Tyler’s student repertory acting company were nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition sponsored by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

“To be nominated for the Irene Ryan competition is truly an honor in itself and can be claimed as resume credit by only a select few in any given year nationwide,” said Dr. James A. Hatfield, professor and director of theatre.

"There has never been any doubt about the talent and skill of the student's who participate in our repertory company, and this recognition for nearly one-third of the acting ensemble is well deserved,” Hatfield added. “Our students possess the skills developed in repertory production that will serve them well in both the classroom and performance venue.”

The Irene Ryan acting scholarship program is recognized nationally as the most prominent university acting competition, Hatfield said. Each competitor must first be nominated from a participating or associate theatre production by an adjudicator or director before receiving an official nomination. Nominees continue in regional and national competition for performance scholarships funded by the bequest of actress Irene Ryan, who is best remembered for her role as “Granny” in the “Beverly Hillbillies.”

Nominees from UT Tyler, and the productions for which they were nominated, include:

Denise Green, senior theatre major, “Annie”; Connie Orr, graduate theatre student, “Annie”; Jerone Turner, graduate theatre student, “Othello”; Val Frazee, graduate theatre student, “Othello”; and Amanda Campbell, junior theatre major, “In the Belly of the Beast.”

Also, Chris Taylor, senior theatre major, “In the Belly of the Beast”; Kyle Halberstadt, senior English major, “In the Belly of the Beast”; and senior theatre majors Nathan Taylor and Geanina Barna, Student 10-Minute Plays.

Since 1999, UT Tyler has been the host site for two KCACTF state festivals and two regional festivals, involving more than 3,000 theatre students, professors and nationally recognized artists.

The 2003 state festival was held at UT Tyler during the week of Nov. 3. UT Tyler opened the festival with its production of Adrian Hall’s “In the Belly of the Beast – Revisited.”

Additional performances of “In the Belly of the Beast” are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 22-23, at The Theatre. For more information, call 903-566-7490.
