Music Program to Present Comic Operas

Wealth, fame, love, murder and slapstick are all part of the UT Tyler Music Program’s opera workshop production to be presented Friday, Nov. 21, and Sunday, Nov. 23.

The opera workshop class, under the direction of Dr. Molly Johnson and accompanied by Jeffrey Ford, will present a program of two works: The Stoned Guest, a Half-Act Opera by P.D.Q. Bach, and A Game of Chance, a comic one-act opera by Seymour Barab. Both are sung in English.

The operas will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 and 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Braithwaite Recital Hall at UT Tyler’s R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center. The program is open to the public. Admission will be free.

The Stoned Guest tells the shallow and meaningless story of three characters who find themselves lost in the woods and subsequently rescued by a friendly St. Bernard. A thin subplot of mistaken identity and jealousy rounds out this zany parody of grand opera.

The opera features music majors Sarah Shipley as “Donna Ribalda,” a high-born lady of the lowlands, Linda Nylund as “Carmen Ghia,” a woman of ailing repute, and Matt Horn as “Il Commendatoreador,” the stoned guest; theatre major Chris Taylor as “Don Octave,” an itinerant nobleman; and business major Kara Seydler as “the Dog.”

A Game of Chance is the tale of three bored knitters (Shipley, Seydler and music major Linda Heatley), each of whom has one special dream for happiness in life. Their wishes are granted by a mysterious representative (Taylor), but the results are not quite what they expected.

“Come see it!” said Johnson, assistant professor of voice. “If you’re new to opera, this is a fun introduction. If you’re an aficionado, you will enjoy the clever references to grand opera in the Bach and the lyrical, lilting score of the Barab.”
