UT Tyler students (from left) Angela Riddick, Tiffany Stein and Monica Yarbrough are pictured at a poster presentation session during the conference.

UT Tyler was represented at the Southwest Regional Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Student Research Conference recently held at South Padre Island.

A group of UT Tyler science and engineering students attended, accompanied by Dr. Stephen Rainwater, associate professor of computer science and Dr. Jeffrey R. Mountain, associate professor of mechanical engineering. Rainwater and Mountain also served as judges for the conference’s poster presentation contest.

Participating students presented their research either in oral presentations or during poster sessions. UT Tyler students presenting were:

  • Tiffany Stein, mechanical engineering student, presented her research entitled “CFD Analysis of Thermophysical Parameters Affecting Laser-Ablation SWNT Production.”

  • Angela Riddick, mechanical engineering student, presented her topic, “Fuzzy Logic Preprocessor and Simulator Development for Eight-bit Microcontroller Applications.”

  • Monica Yarbrough, chemistry student, presented a poster on her topic, “Synthesis of a Macroinitiator and its Use in the Preparation of Poly(ethylene-b-methacrylonitrile).”

The LSAMP program at UT Tyler is administered through the UT System under the direction of Dr. Pablo Arenaz, associate vice president for academic affairs at The University of Texas at El Paso. The program is funded by grants from the National Science Foundation Directorate of Human Resource Development.
