Trying
Out New Equipment

Scott
Brown, junior chemistry major, manipulates data using the Shimadzu
UV-2101PC UV-VIS Scanning Spectrophotometer, which was donated to
the chemistry department by the DPS Crime Lab in Tyler, while Danjela
Stojanovic, junior chemistry major, prepares a new sample for analysis.
Ladona Cook, senior laboratory technician, provides support in learning
the operation of the new instrument. The chemistry department also
recently acquired a Shimadzu Model FTIR-8400S Fourier Transform
Infrared Spectrophotometer. Both instruments are used in upper level
chemistry courses to determine the composition of samples synthesized
in the laboratory.

Scott
Brown, junior chemistry major, and Sean Butler, senior chemistry
major, learn to operate IRsoultion software that is interfaced with
the chemistry department's new Shimadzu FTIR-8400S infrared spectrophotometer,
as senior laboratory technician Ladona Cook looks on. Mandy Wilson,
junior biology major, and Manuel Zancanella, senior chemistry major,
learn the proper positioning of a sample in the sampling compartment.
