Art Program Announces Exhibits

The UT Tyler art program and The Meadows Gallery will present “Wallpaper,’’ an installation by Patrick Schmidt, Oct. 20-Nov. 20 at the gallery.

A reception/gallery talk with the artist will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. All gallery events are free and open to the public.

Schmidt appropriates image patterns from wallpaper books, mixing and layering dissonant colors and images and creating adjacent environments. These appear to have no relationship to each other, while contrasting in a style suggestive of the Pop/Op art of the 1960s.

"Wallpaper’’ by Schmidt

His paintings draw upon samples from all over the world. However, his primary interest is in the effects that these patterns have when enlarged, layered, loaded with intense color and juxtaposed in the visual field. "I want the viewer to spend time with my work, to stand there for a while, because it takes time to let the conceptual aspect of my images creep in," he said.

Schmidt received a bachelor of fine arts in painting in 1995 and a master of fine arts in 2000 from Central Michigan University. He has exhibited his work broadly, including solo shows in 2002 at Firelands College, Huron, Ohio; Kansas City Artists Coalition, Kansas City, Mo.; Marian College, Indianapolis; and Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Mich.

GERHAUSER EXHIBIT

Works by Gerhauser

An exhibition featuring the works of Amy Gerhauser, UT Tyler assistant professor of art, is being held Oct. 20-Nov. 14 in The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery at Coker College, Hartsville, S.C.

The exhibition is titled “eFemeral.’’ A reception will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.

Gerhauser constructs large outdoor sculptures using recycled wood, metal and handmade paper. Her indoor installations combine elements from the outdoor sculptures with prints, photographs and small sculptures.

She is in her fourth year as a professor at UT Tyler.
