Dr. Klotz Appointed to System-Wide Commission on Tuition

AUSTIN – Chancellor Mark G. Yudof has announced the appointment of members to a University of Texas System Commission on Tuition whose primary responsibility will be to review campus plans for setting tuition policies and to advise the chancellor on recommendations that he will make to the Board of Regents.

Dr. Linda Klotz, dean of the UT Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences, is among the 18 members appointed to the commission, which includes students and administrators from across the system.

Chaired by Teresa Sullivan, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, the group will meet for the first time Sept. 15 via videoconference to begin a discussion of tuition issues.

Component institutions were to have submitted their plans for campus-level consultations to the system administration for review by August 1. By November 1, each campus must submit its proposal to change tuition rates, if any change is needed.

Tuition proposals will be submitted to the Board of Regents for further discussion and possible action at a special called meeting of the board on Nov. 18. Tuition increases could become effective in January.

Yudof also announced the formation of a committee composed of economists and other academic experts to assess best practices and strategic uses of tuition. This group will evaluate statistical and financial data, including student financial need, and analyze methods of using tuition and fee policies to achieve desired strategic goals.

The multiple levels of review at the campuses and system administration are designed to ensure wide participation in the process of setting tuition, as well as to help guarantee access and affordability.

The 78th Legislature delegated authority over tuition rates to boards of regents, effective September 1. The U. T. System deferred considering any tuition changes at component institutions until January to permit student participation in proposals submitted from campuses.

Other members of the Commission on Tuition are: Chuck Ambler, graduate dean, UTEP; Rosalie Ambrosino, vice president student affairs, UTSA; Dana Dunn, VP for academic affairs and interim provost, UTA; Richard Lariviere, dean of liberal arts, UT Austin; Jose Martin, provost, UTB; James Langabeer, vice president business affairs, UTPA; James Olson, dean of the UTPB College of Arts and Sciences; Mary Evans Sias, senior vice president for student affairs and external relations, UTD; and Brian Haley, UT Austin Student Government president.

Also, Anna Lisa Holand, UT Austin Student Bar Association president; Garyn Shuler, UT Austin Pharmacy Council president; Jeremy Chance, UTHSC-Houston SAC president; Josh Warren, UTA Student Congress president and SAC member; Michael J. Ahearn, dean for allied health professions, UTMD Anderson; Robert Alpern, dean and professor of medicine, UTSMC-Dallas; David Jones, associate dean for medical school admissions, UTHSC-SA; and Pamela Watson, UTMB dean of nursing. The commission will be assisted by Mike Kerker, U. T. System assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Members of the committee of tuition experts are: Robert Peterson, UT Austin professor of marketing, committee chair; John Dollard, UT Austin associate dean for graduate studies and professor of mathematics; Daniel Hammermash, UT Austin professor of economics; Richard Lariviere, UT Austin dean of liberal arts; and Stephen Magee, UT Austin professor of business administration. The committee will be assisted by Pedro Reyes, U. T. System associate vice chancellor for planning and assessment, and Edward Baldwin U. T. System policy analyst.
