Dedication: ‘This is a Great Day’

Louise
Ornelas cuts the ribbon with the assistance of, from left, Joseph
Ornelas,
Dr. Rodney Mabry, Dr. Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn and Dr. Ben Fisch.
A dedication ceremony was held Friday morning for UT Tyler’s
new Herrington Patriot Center.
Dedication speaker
was Dr. Jon Divine, a UT Tyler alumnus who serves as team physician
for the University of Houston and the WNBA Houston Comets. Other
speakers were State Rep. Leo Berman, Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber, Dr.
Pedro Reyes, UT System Associate Vice Chancellor for Planning and
Assessment and SGA President Ryan Palmquist.
“Today
we take time out of our schedules to marvel at what has been done
and to thank our donors and everyone who made this possible,’’
UT Tyler Rodney Mabry said in welcoming remarks. “This is
a great day in the life of our university.’’
The Herrington
Patriot Center is “a perfect example of what happens when
people give of their hearts,’’ said Seeber, who also
thanked the donors for their generous gifts and support for the
university throughout the years. “You have given so much in
the past so that we could have so much in the future.’’
Speaking on
behalf of the student body, Palmquist thanked “everyone who
had something to do with making this building possible. We all know
UT Tyler is growing but for the last few years we’ve been
missing something,’’ he said. “This is exactly
the improvement we’ve all been waiting for.’’
Dr. David Dykes
delivered the invocation and Dr. Mark Johnson led the assembly in
singing the National Anthem. Dr. Linda Klotz introduced the dedication
speaker.
Participants
in the ribbon cutting were Joseph and Louise Ornelas, Dr. Mabry,
Dr. Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn and Dr. Ben Fisch.
The HPC is named for the family of Louise H. Ornelas, who has been
an avid supporter of UT Tyler for many years. The center also includes
the Jean Lancaster Academic Wing, Maytee Fisch Convocation Center,
Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn Recreation and Therapy Pool and the Meadows
Student Lounge.
