Dr.
Stephens’ Paintings Exhibited at Kilgore College

Dr.
William B. Stephens, UT Tyler professor of art, is showing 24 of
his watercolor paintings at the Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center,
Kilgore College, Sept. 22-Oct. 22.
Stephens
joined the art faculty at UT Tyler in the fall of 1976. He is the
author of one book and several refereed journal articles, has exhibited
in Europe, Africa and both Americas, and continues to paint, preferring
watercolor over other mediums. His goal in painting is "to
bring nature and art into one."
The
Kilgore show is titled "Out of the City." “It is
a continuing response to the character of the East Texas landscape
and the feeling that these ponds, bogs, trees and meadows have a
life of their own, and project themselves into men's lives so that
we must recognize the independence of these forms,’’
Stephens said. “Like all nature, they have their own laws
and their own ends. At the same time these forms are integrated
into our own consciousness and constantly interpreted in terms of
our purposes.’’
The
fluid washes in watercolor and the sometimes heavy patches of paint
emphasize the handmade quality of the work and remind the viewer
that these images are stripped to essentials. The images are the
reality of the author and he hopes these works reflect the reality
of others.
