Presents Grant to Jones Elementary
The
Principal and Superintendent Institute at UT
Tyler recently awarded a grant to Jones Elementary
School to assist with restructuring projects.
The
institute presented a check for $500 to Jones
Principal Michael Berrier during the first All
Administrator Day at Tyler Independent School
District. As part of the presentation, Reba
Schumacher, TISD director of elementary education,
announced that her office would match the grant
provided by the institute.

Timothy Jones (second from right), director of the Principal and
Superintendent Institute, presents grant check to Jones Principal
Michael Berrier. Also pictured are Dr. David Simmons, TISD superintendent
of schools, Reba Schumacher, director of elementary education
and Dr. William Geiger, dean of the College of Education and Psychology.
Berrier
plans to use the funds to purchase professional
development materials to aid TISD schools in
their restructuring projects.
Dr.
David Simmons, Tyler ISD superintendent, is
utilizing The Principal and Superintendent Institute
for professional development of the district’s
administrators over the next four years.
The
institute, which focuses on systemic school
restructuring though research and professional
development of practicing school leaders, is
part of the Southwest Educational Research and
Leadership Academy founded by UT Tyler President
Rodney Mabry in 2000. SERLA is a research center
housing The Principal and Superintendent Institute,
The Literacy Center and the Texas Math and Science
Initiative.
The
work of the Principal and Superintendent Institute
is aligned with the new Texas Education Agency
model in Instruction Leadership Development.
Publications and research presentations include
motivation, attitudes and beliefs of school
administrators, professional development, "Standard
Principalship" certification exams and
school restructuring.
Currently
the institute is researching organizational
culture, specifically toward change, in schools
and school systems. TISD and more than 40 other
school districts will participate in the study.
The results are planned for presentation at
the Southwest Educational Research Association
annual conference in February.
