Student Journalists
Win 24 TIPA Awards
Members
of The Patriot student newspaper won 24 awards, including seven
first place honors during the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press
Association Convention April 1-3 in Austin.
The awards marked
the most ever won by the UT Tyler students. In overall sweepstakes
points, The Patriot finished second in Division II, which consists
of 15 Texas colleges and universities with an enrollment of 10,000
or more.
UT Tyler is
a Division IV school based on its enrollment, however, the newspaper
staff elected to compete in an upper division.
“These
awards are a reflection of The Patriot editor’s, reporter’s
and photographer’s hard work and persistence in gathering
news about UT Tyler,’’ said Dr. Kenneth Casstevens,
chairman of the Department of Communication.
Students competed
in an on-site, live contest on April 1. In this competition, all
students compete together regardless of their school’s enrollment.
Patriot editor
in chief Robert Boggs claimed first prize in headline writing and
copy editing. Boggs, a senior from Gilmer, also is an online editor
