In the Spotlight

Six chemistry and biology faculty members and 10 chemistry students served as judges in the 2004 East Texas Regional Science Fair, held March 4 at Kilgore College.

Chemistry department faculty serving as judges in the physical sciences division included Dr. Neil Gray, Dr. Brian Taylor and Sam Weaver. Gray is responsible annually for selecting judges for the Physical Sciences Division of the fair.

Chemistry students serving as judges in the physical sciences division were Sean Butler, Scott Brown, Jason Distefano, Randa Gates, Dustin Porter, Dean Stuart, Danijela Stojanovic, Jasmine Wong, Monica Yarbrough and Manuel Zancanella.

Biology department faculty serving as judges in the biological division were Dr. Darrell Pogue, Dr. Ron Gutberlet and Dr. John Boucher.

Dr. Davor Jedlicka, professor of sociology, is the recipient of a competitive grant to participate in symposiums and workshops on Creating and Sustaining Learning Communities.’’ The University of Texas Telecampus awarded one grant to UT Tyler and one to UT Medical Branch in Galveston.

The funding includes one-week participation, March 22-26, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the next academic year, grantees are expected to conduct workshops on developing and teaching Internet courses. Workshops will be conducted at The University of Texas at Austin for the Telecampus faculty.

The MIT symposium was organized under the auspices of the Learning International Network Consortium. Scholars from 25 nations with experience in distance and Internet learning presented the most recent findings on techniques of knowledge transference, critical thinking and identity development to sustain lifelong learning via the Internet. Dr. Jedlicka's involvement with the Telecampus is through teaching a graduate course entitled “Internet Communities.’’

UT Tyler graduate Sheila Jordan, currently a graduate student in Spanish linguistics at Texas A&M University, won the universitywide graduate student research award for her master of arts thesis.

Jordan plans to pursue a doctorate degree, possibly at the University of California-Davis, where she has been accepted.
