University Receives
Grant to Conduct Institute
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has
awarded UT Tyler a Teacher Quality Grant to conduct an Institute
for Scientific Literacy, Terri R. Hebert, teacher-in-residence in
the Teaching Excellence in Math and Science program, announced.
The grant, including
supplemental funding from TEMS, totals $99,961.
Designed for middle school science teachers in Region
7, the program will include a summer institute beginning in June.
Teaching strategies will focus primarily on inquiry-based instruction.
Approximately 30 teachers will participate during
the summer, as well as throughout the upcoming school year. Each
month, there will be a Saturday dedicated to learning more about
life, earth and physical science.
At the completion of the institute, teachers will
conduct action research projects and present their findings to the
larger group.
The instructional leadership team includes Dr. Ann
Guilbert, assistant professor of education, and Dr. Ron Gutberlet,
associate professor of biology, said Hebert, who also will be working
with the instructional team.
