Promoting Literacy

Tom Mullins, president of the Tyler Economic Development Council, reads a “Hank, the Cowdog’’ story to schoolchildren in a reading practicum class April 1 in the University Center. Community leaders were invited to participate in readings to promote the UT Tyler Literacy Conference. “Hank the Cowdog’’ author John Erickson performed during the conference, held April 3 at Robert E. Lee High School.

Other readers were Dr. William Bruce, UT Tyler associate dean for educator preparation programs; Dr. Jerome Milton, minister, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and coach, T.K. Gorman High School; Sgt. Jose Zamora, U.S. Army recruiter; Gary Swindle, Tyler police chief; and J.B. Smith, Smith County sheriff.
