Newspaper Renamed Patriot Talon

Students read the Patriot Talon during a break on the first
day of classes last week. Pictured, from left, are (standing) Joe

Beaumont; (seated) Ray Brooks, a sophomore from Fort Worth; and
T.J. Nixon, a sophomore from Denver, Colo.
Student newspaper
editors at UT Tyler changed their publication’s
name to Patriot Talon from The Patriot.
The student
editorial board voted to change the name to distinguish the newspaper
from other organizations on campus also having “Patriot’’ in
their titles.
“We believed it was time for a change,’’ Emily
Stevens, editor in chief, said. “The new name makes us stand
out more, and it also illustrates the way we defend the right of
the students to have access to the most current and vital information
available.’’
The student newspaper began at the university in March 1973 with
the name Tyler State College, which was changed to The
Tyler Statesman in May 1974.
The newspaper’s
previous name, The Patriot,
was chosen in 1976 to commemorate the bicentennial year, and
also was chosen at about the same time the Patriot was selected
as the university’s
mascot.
The newspaper’s
new name, along with a new logo, debuted on Aug. 25, in the first
issue of the semester.
