UT Tyler Students Present Over 6,000 Items to Food Bank

Students at The University of Texas at Tyler presented 6,342 cans, as well as other non-perishable items, to the East Texas Food Bank during the wrap up of the iCan food drive.
Elizabeth Clark, president of Alpha Psi Omega and coordinator of the campaign, presented Rosemary McClain, East Texas Food Bank director of food resources, with a plaque commemorating the donations.
“We really appreciate the University for thinking of the East Texas Food Bank. We provide food for agencies in 26 counties, so by next Friday, all of this food will be in the hands of the less fortunate,” McClain said. |
Agencies served by the food bank include the Salvation Army, People Attempting to Help (PATH), church pantries and day care facilities.
“The world is full of the working poor. We’re here to help them get over the bump in the road,” McClain added.
President Rodney H. Mabry presented certificates to the Accounting Society and Student Nurses Association, who were recognized as having donated the most cans, each giving 2,014.
They will receive a special luncheon sponsored by the Physical Plant.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the students, faculty and staff for all of the things that they do well, particularly this time of the year. Thanks for working so hard,” President Mabry told the students.
Shaune Martinez and Clark were commended for getting the whole campus community involved in the campaign.
“This is part of what universities do,” President Mabry said.
Student organizations received certificates for their participation in the campaign. Sara Lekhraj, nursing major, won free textbooks for the spring semester in a drawing held by the College of Nursing to encourage participation.
McClain presented UT Tyler with the Golden Can Award, given to sponsors of large food donations.
