University Hires First Director of Residence Life

David R. Hill

David R. Hill has been appointed to serve as UT Tyler’s first director of residence life.

Hill will develop a comprehensive housing program for the university and, most immediately, will be responsible for supervising the opening of a 200-bed student apartment complex, scheduled for completion in the fall. He also will contribute to the final design stages for a 200-bed student residence hall, projected to open in the fall of 2005, and will contribute to UT Tyler’s student affairs team on judicial issues and many other aspects of student life. Cirque Eloize Nomade Performance Feb. 26

Cirque Eloize NomadeCanadian circus troupe Cirque Éloize will bring its lastest creation, Nomade, to The University of Texas at Tyler R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center on Feb. 26, Susan Thomae-Morphew, Cowan Center director, announced.

Debate Team Places First at State Tournament

UT Tyler's Amy Arellano and Noah Conklin placed first at the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Spring Tournament held Feb. 6-7 in Hurst.

Three other teams from UT Tyler placed in debate competition at the tournament, which was attended by 20 universities and colleges from across the state, said Dr. Jeffrey Hobbs, UT Tyler debate coach and associate professor of speech communications. More>>>

Film Series Presents ‘Highway Hangouts’

diner“Highway Hangouts,’’ based on the series of books by author and photographer John Margolies, will be shown Feb. 18 as part of UT Tyler’s Third Wednesday Film Series.

The film will be featured at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in FAC 1009. A brief introduction will precede each screening. More>>>

Students Encouraged to Return National Survey

A random sample of UT Tyler freshmen and seniors recently received The College Student Report 2004 National Survey of Student Engagement. To encourage students to complete and return the surveys, Dr. Howard Patterson, dean of students, announced that several prizes will be given away to randomly selected students who complete and return the survey by the May 8, 2004 deadline. UT Tyler Alumna Named Teacher of the Year

Ellen HerbertFormer UT Tyler student Ellen Herbert has been named the 2004 Secondary Teacher of the Year. She will represent Texas in the National Teacher of the Year selection.

“I had wonderful teachers at UT Tyler, and I’m still in contact with them today. I still call them for advice,” Herbert said. More>>>

University Research Receives National Recognition

Research in nanotechnology conducted by Dr. Robert Greendyke, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Tyler, has received national recognition.

For the third time in as many years, Dr. Greendyke’s research was recognized in the “Year in Review’’ edition of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Aerospace America Magazine. The edition highlights cutting-edge aerospace engineering research work in the United States for the previous year. More>>>

Apartments – Construction has begun to create 200 beds in four buildings. Details>>>

Baseball/Softballs Fields – The first phase is expected to go out to bid in April.

Dormitory – An architect has been selected to design the building. Details>>>

Engineering, Science and Technology Building – Project is out to bid. Proposals are to be opened at 2 p.m. March 3.

Performance Soccer Field – Construction has begun. Completion expected in May.

Longview University Center monument signs – Project underway. Anticipated completion date is March 30.

Other Projects: Request for qualifications went out for the design of two more parking lots and a small renovation project in PHE. Evaluations are being completed for selection of the architect. Details>>>
