Reed Named First UT Tyler Softball Coach

Michael ReedMichael Reed of Tyler has been named the first head softball coach at The University of Texas at Tyler.

UT Tyler athletics director Dr. Howard Patterson made the announcement during a press conference Friday at the Herrington Patriot Center.

“The University of Texas at Tyler and the city of Tyler is very fortunate to be able to have someone of Mike Reed’s caliber,” said Patterson. “He is a high quality individual and softball coach who will make a great addition to our staff.”

Coach Reed, who earned his master of education degree at UT Tyler, comes to the UT Tyler staff from fellow American Southwest Conference member East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. At ETBU, Reed became the all-time coaching win leader for the Lady Tiger softball program after only three years as head coach. Reed was honored as ASC East Division Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

“It is an incredible time to be a part of The University of Texas at Tyler athletics program. I am so excited about the opportunity to build a first-class program from the ground up at a first-class university,” said Reed.

Dr. Dale Lunsford, Dr. Rodney Mabry, Michael Reed and Dr. Howard PattersonAt ETBU, Reed led the softball program to three-straight ASC championships and NCAA regional tournament berths in 2002 and 2003. In the 2002 campaign, Reed guided his team to the round of 16 – just missing the D-III World Series. In his three years at the ETBU helm, Reed’s teams have never won less than 30 games in a season. His teams have also been ranked as high as #11 in the NFCA/USA Today Division III Softball Poll.

Reed looks to attract players to UT Tyler’s new softball program who aspire to excel not only on the field, but also in the classroom and in their everyday lives.

“I look forward to bringing in topnotch students who are excited about the education offered here, and at the same time are excited about being a part of the creation of UT Tyler softball,” said Reed.

Reed is a native of Clarksville and a 1997 graduate of ETBU with a degree in business. He is a former pitcher for the ETBU baseball team.

UT Tyler will begin its softball program in the spring of 2005. Coach Reed will spend the 2004 season recruiting prospective student-athletes and overseeing the completion of the new UT Tyler softball complex scheduled for completion this year.
