Adventures in Trigonometry

Students in a trigonometry class taught by Dr. Jennifer McLoud enjoy
springtime weather and the parklike setting on campus as they participate
in an “outdoor adventure’’ group quiz. The class
recently went outside fitted with protractors, rulers, a tape measure
and yard stick to determine valid trigonometric ways to find the
height of the Riter Carillon Tower, height of a flag pole and the
distance across the lake. In the picture they are discussing the
validity of their methods to solve the problems at hand.
“This
was an excellent opportunity for the students to use their trigonometry
skills to solve real world problems,’’ Dr. McLoud said.
“We had discussed in class how to find the height of an object
but we had not discussed a method for measuring the distance across
the lake. But wouldn't you know it, they figured it out -- without
my help!’’
