Science Sponsors ACM High School Contest
Students
from 12 schools visited UT Tyler recently to participate in the
11th Annual ACM High School Programming Contest.
Participants in March 5 event at Muntz Library the
traveled to Tyler from Dallas, Allen, Euless, Longview, Southlake,
Fort Worth, Waller Austin, Arlington, Lindale and Whitehouse.
Nineteen teams consisting of 64 participants competed.
Teams consisting of two or three contestants were given 15 problems
to solve in a time period of four hours.
The first-place winner was Carroll Senior High School,
submitting 12 correct solutions. Dunbar High School took second
place by solving 11 problems correctly. The Oakridge School submitted
nine correct solutions to take third place.
The contest was supported by computer science faculty,
staff and students. Dr. Artur Mikitiuk, Dr. Leonard Brown and graduate
student Daron Walls wrote the problem set. Dr. Steve Rainwater was
the contest director and Kay Pleasant was contest organizer. Michael
Martin, lab director, was in charge of setup and keeping the official
time. Dr. Artur Mikitiuk participated as Head Judge. Also judging
were Dr. Arun Kulkarni, Dr. Steve Rainwater, Dr. Leonard Brown.
Planning and preparation for the event began in
October 2003. More than 50 ACM members and computer science students
served on committees and worked to ensure the success of the event.
University Pines provided facilities for lunch and the admissions
office provided a campus tour for contestants and coaches.
