Technology Student Makes Presentation on Electronic Portfolios Kirk Hill, a graduate student in the UT Tyler technology department, delivered a presentation on electronic portfolios at the annual convention of the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT) Oct. 21 in Louisville, Ky. Dr. John Fabac, associate professor of technology, provided an introduction to the presentation.
Hill and fellow student, Dusti Gauger, developed a set of downloadable program-specific Microsoft FrontPage© templates that allow students to establish links between course competencies and examples of their course work (artifacts) that show evidence of competency attainment. In addition to matrices of artifacts, the templates also provide sections for an introductory page, a resume, work experience, education and descriptions of specialized knowledge and skills.
Students in undergraduate programs in the technology department are provided with an orientation in the use and maintenance of electronic portfolios during the freshman and junior years. In their last semester of instruction they are required to develop a completed electronic portfolio in the technology capstone course.
In addition to providing user-friendly access to student accomplishments for the purpose of satisfying NAIT requirements during their scheduled program assessment visits, the portfolios have proven to be a major asset during job seeking and interviewing. “The work done by Dusti and Kirk will have a lasting impact on the careers of graduates of the Department of Technology,’’ Dr. Fabac said.
The National Association of Industrial Technology is the accrediting body for colleges and universities that offer degrees in Industrial Technology, a field of study designed to prepare technical and/or management oriented professionals for employment in business, industry, education and government. The NAIT national convention provides a forum for universities to share best practices in research, administration, and teaching.
