| 3rd Wednesday Film Series Presents ‘Heat and Dust’
The Friends of the Arts and the UT Tyler theatre department will present “Heat and Dust,’’ starring Julie Christie, Greta Scacchi and Shashi Kapoor, Nov. 17 as part of the Third Wednesday Film Series.
The film will be shown at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Cowan Center lecture hall, Room 1009. Tickets are $4. UT Tyler, Tyler Junior College and Texas College students will be admitted free with valid ID.
This semester, the series of classic, documentary and foreign films features the work of independent artists Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
At the time the film was released in 1983, “Heat and Dust’’ was Merchant-Ivory’s biggest commercial success. The film tells two parallel stories set in India, one in the present and the other in the days of British rule. In 1920s India, a young English bride, Olivia (Scacchi), finds herself in a passionate, forbidden affair with the local Nawab (Kapoor).
In the second story, Olivia’s great niece, Anne (Christie), travels to India and there learns of her great aunt's affair with the Nawab, her subsequent pregnancy and her exile from the British community. Anne's life begins to roughly imitate that of Olivia's when she has an affair with a local Indian administrator (Zakir Hussain) and also becomes pregnant.
Film presentations are introduced by Jim Yancy, lecturer in opera appreciation; critic Jon Perry; and Dr. James Hatfield, associate professor and art program chair.
