Area juniors and seniors from Jacksonville, John Tyler, Henderson and Brook Hill high schools attended an open house presented by the UT Tyler engineering department on Nov. 9.

Approximately 80 students explored the world of engineering as they observed demonstrations and participated in hands-on laboratory activities. Electrical and mechanical engineering faculty and students assisted the visitors with experiments illustrating concepts involved in circuit design and power generation, strength of materials used in construction, process control and manufacturing of plastics. The engineering building was a beehive of activity as students rotated between six different activities.

The engineering faculty also visited with the high school students and their teachers about career opportunities in engineering, explaining the different types of engineering disciplines and typical activities performed by practicing engineers in the course of their job responsibilities.

“Everyone involved appeared to have a great time and we enjoyed hosting such an energetic and interested group of students,’’ said Jennifer Scott, UT Tyler engineer recruiter. “No doubt, some of these young men and women will be designing the future.”
