Canned Food Drive Continues Through Dec. 10

Elizabeth Clark and Dr. Larry Carter are pictured with “iCAN’’ donations. Clark is one of the students coordinating the food drive. Dr. Carter’s classes are collecting canned food items for the project. |
Students, faculty and staff can make donations to the East Texas Food Bank through the “iCAN’’ campuswide canned food drive, which continues through Dec. 10.
The event is spearheaded by UT Tyler students, including members of the Student Nurses Association and Nursing Christian Fellowship. The Office of Student Development is assisting with the project.
“The East Texas Food Bank is in desperate need of food right now. They have almost no cans at all, and many people may not be fortunate enough to have food for the holiday season,’’ said Elizabeth Clark, a worker in Office of Student Development and one of the students who is coordinating the project. “With our help, we can strike out hunger in East Texas through iCAN.’’
Several organizations on campus have devised methods for collecting items for iCAN. |
Many professors are supplying extra credit to students who bring cans to class. Muntz Library is offering to excuse late books when students bring in five cans.Canned goods also can be dropped off in Room 111 of the University Center.
“This is a great way for students, faculty and staff at UT Tyler to make a difference this year in the lives of people all around East Texas,’’ said Shaune Martinez, student development specialist.
Students also are soliciting donations from the Tyler community. Some stores have been contacted, and student organizations are planning events aimed at the community.
